It feels like an absolute age since I reviewed the first Garnier BB cream when in fact it was only a year ago. Seems fitting that a year later I review their newest addition to the BB family, the oil free skin perfector. When I was pregnant and for some months afterwards my skin was much drier than I’d been used to but as times gone on I think I’m getting oilier again and the BB cream I loved is no longer working for me. It leaves me super shiny and doesn’t last 5 minutes so when I saw the combination-oily skin formula I knew I had to try it. I’ve been putting it off as I have some foundations on the go I just love but given that I am soon returning to work and wont be able to go makeup free as often I thought a return to my beloved BB cream was in order and I’m very happy to report that this new version has is everything I hoped for and more.
First of all the original and oil free are totally different products.. or so it would seem. The original (below right) is thick and a lot like a tinted moisturiser, the new formula (below left) is more like a liquid foundation in it’s consistency and it’s coverage is higher too, I’d say light to medium where the original was very light. I was also pleased to find that the oil free BB cream was buildable, set pretty quickly to a satin finish and get this.. lasts ALL DAY! I wanted to give it a real test rather than wearing it around the house so yesterday in very humid weather I walked to work for a visit and went food shopping.. all in all I must have walked more than 2 miles round trip. My face was shiny after only half an hour.. as I’d expect so I thought by the time I got home I’d be makeup-less, I forgot all about it until the evening when I went to wash my face and low and behold my base was perfectly intact! I loved the original BB cream and that only lasted til lunch so if this had done the same but worked for my now oilier skin I’d have been happy but this is a TOTALLY different animal! If you hated the first version I encourage you to get a sample of this because it’s a very impressive product.
Another rather significant difference is the shades of these too ‘light’ creams.. they should be the same in theory but the new oil free one is considerably lighter which again for me is a plus because the original was always a little too dark. So you paler girls again. give the new version a whirl! I have considered that in the colder weather when I feel I need more moisture I could mix the two together and create some kind of hybrid but I’ll let you know how that goes as and when I try it. When I ‘hauled’ this on YouTube someone commented to say they hadn’t liked the new formulation because it clung to dry patches and wasn’t at all moisturising, it’s important to note that the oil free BB cream is nothing like a tinted moisturiser so although I prefer it if that’s what you’re looking for I’d still recommend the original. It’s worth mentioning thought that it didn’t dry my skin out in the least.
You can see the official differences above, the only thing that stands out to me is the improved sun protection – I haven’t checked the photo flash back yet so again. will update when I’ve had it for a while I just really wanted to tell you my first impressions. I’m kicking myself that I didn’t try this as soon as it launched because it’s totally blown my healthy mix serum out of the water for longevity which I’d have bet a lot against. I think I’m so impressed because I was expecting so little but really truly.. I love this stuff!
Currently on offer for £7.49 in Boots here (but I’d be happy to pay the RRP £9.99)
